LYHBeyond Tunnel Tracker tracks excavation’s progress along nearly mile-long tunnel path
Excavation of the nearly mile-long, 12-foot-diameter underground Blackwater CSO Tunnel is making steady progress — one blast at a time, through solid rock. To keep up with Atkinson Construction’s progress in clearing the eventual tunnel’s path, the public can view the “LYHBeyond Tunnel Tracker,” a new feature on the LYHBeyond.org project website.
After two months of drilling and blasting, Atkinson Construction reached the bottom of the Blackwater CSO Tunnel's pump station shaft at the bottom of 7th Street on March 17, 2025. The shaft is 38 feet in diameter and 88 feet deep. Now, crews can begin drill-and-blast excavation of the 12-foot diameter tunnel that will stretch almost a mile in distance at a depth of between 70 and 120 feet under the Blackwater Creek.
